PORTRAIT & LIFESTYLE

MATERNITY, BABY, FAMILY & COUPLES

You know the kind of photos you’d be proud to have hanging on your wall – natural and beautiful images of you and your loved ones. Images that tell your very own visual story. With your tastes and preferences, and my expertise, that’s what we’ll create.

Before your shoot, as well as timings, where we’ll go and what you might wear, we’ll talk about the kind of pictures you want. So you can feel confident that I understand what you want the end results to be. Your session’s all about you and your favourite people enjoying your time together. You won’t have to “perform” – you just need to relax and be yourselves.

Stiff poses that don’t feel like you, or that little ones inevitably squirm out of, aren’t my style. And there’ll be no rushing, or standing around feeling awkward and self-conscious. I’ll chat to you, and might give you suggestions for things to do. You might find yourself pulling funny faces behind me, throwing your kids up in the air, or whispering silly secrets to one another.

Whether it’s just the two of you, or you’re with extended family, friends, or your kids, your session’s going to be fun!

As well as your personalities, I’ll capture the shared moments you’ll want to hold onto – the tiny, adorable yawns, the bear hugs and the belly laughs – in all their honest and spontaneous glory. Keeping things relaxed and using natural light wherever possible, means I can get the candid and creative shots you’re after.

Because I’ve lived in Edinburgh for 14 years, I’ve got a wealth of local knowledge about great locations in what’s got to be one of the most photogenic cities on the planet. But if there are spots that are special for you, please let me know. It doesn’t matter if, on the day of your session, the Scottish weather decides to give us a taste of all 4 seasons, or if your kids are unwell. If either of these things happen, you’ll have the option to reschedule.

I’m a mum myself, and I’m flexible, non-judgemental and patient. I’ve been doing this for 8 years, worked with dozens of young children and have learned to embrace the unexpected! The times when things didn’t go to plan have produced some of the shots my clients have loved the most.

My family and I were incredibly impressed by our experience working with Rachel. She is a talented photographer and skilled people person and she was able to make the four of us feel at ease in front of her camera. This is reflected in the stunning photographs she created. Rachel was very helpful in suggesting a gorgeous outdoor location which offered us a range of settings for the photo shoot. My five year old son was not at all comfortable with being photographed and Rachel was incredibly patient with him and gently and skilfully managed to bring him on side. As a result we have an incredible collection of stunning images which we’ll alway treasure.

FAMILY SESSIONS - PRICING & PACKAGES

Family sessions usually last around one and a half to two hours ( newborn shoots can be longer than this!) Sessions can take place in your home, outdoors or a combination of the two. The longer session gives me time to get to know you a little bit and make sure everyone’s relaxed before I get the camera out. I will give some direction during the session but I’ll be taking a more documentary style approach so I can capture your family as candidly as possible. Up to two hours might seem like a long session but trust me, it will fly by!

FAMILY & PORTRAIT SESSIONS - WHAT TO EXPECT

Your session can take place an outdoor location you enjoy spending time in, your home or a combination of the two. Home sessions are a good option for younger children and babies, or kids who aren’t so comfortable with new people. If you’d like an outdoor shoot, but don’t have a specific spot in mind, I’m more than happy to suggest settings that will suit the kind of photos you want. Places like Calton Hill, Yellowcraig beach, the Cammo estate and Lauriston Castle all work really well.

On a family session we’ll be together for up to two hours. This might seem like a long time. But, in my experience, this is how long it usually takes to get the best from your session. (And it flies by!) That said, I’m very much guided by you, your kids and how you’re feeling. So if I’ve got everything I need after an hour and a half – great!

An hour-long portrait session is the perfect option if you have have one small child or toddler to be photographed. If you’re not sure which session to go for please ask, I can help choose the right type of session for you.

Whichever session you choose, if we’re out and about, we can start by having a stroll, exploring our surroundings and getting to know each other while I snap away. I might suggest some poses, but never anything forced. I concentrate on working spontaneously, so I can capture your family as they really are, instead of the way they think they should be because they’re in front of a camera.

The best pictures are often the ones where everyone’s focused on, or interacting with, one another. So, be warned! I’ll be encouraging you to let your hair down and play, joke, and chat.

Doing these things means you’ll feel relaxed, your expressions will be genuine, and I’ll be able to create timeless images of you and your loved ones that will bring back nothing but happy memories.

MATERNITY, NEWBORN & BABY SESSIONS

Your last trimester, at around 7-8 months, is best for your hour-long maternity session. It’s when your bump is large and lovely, but you’re not feeling too uncomfortable (or worried about the possibility of your baby putting in an appearance!).

Newborns change and grow so quickly that the window for getting photos of them is brief. These shots are usually taken during their first two weeks, when your new arrival’s still tiny and new. And don’t worry if they don’t appear exactly when they’re meant to! You can make a provisional booking – a month in advance for weekdays, and 2 or 3 months in advance for weekends –  and we’ll arrange a definite date once they show up.

Newborn sessions usually take at least around two hours, sometimes more, so there’s plenty of time for cuddles and feeds.

Although your newborn’s early days are ideal from a photography perspective, I know that is straight after they’ve burst into your life and upended it, so it might not be the ideal time for you! I’ve done these type of sessions at up to six weeks, and they’re every bit as special.

I do my best work when I’m candidly documenting this momentous and emotional time. So, if you’re looking for a set of perfectly posed shots of your baby, a studio photographer is probably going to be a better fit.

After the newborn stage, the next best time to photograph your little one is at 6 – 9 months. Because by then, they’ll be able to sit up on their own. And, ideally, they won’t be mobile yet, so they can’t crawl away from me at high speed!

Depending on the time of year, your session can take place in your home or outdoors – whichever’s going to be most comfortable for you. It should take between 45 around minutes to an hour. After that point, your baby will probably let us know that they’ve had enough!

As well as the bond between you, I’ll be looking to capture their giggles, wide-eyed wonder and changing expressions. All the details that you’ll struggle to hold on to as they get bigger. Simple, natural and intimate portraits of you and your baby are what I’m aiming for.

Rachel came to our home to take photo’s of our 9 month old son Oliver. She came highly recommended from a friend and she didn’t disappoint. She made it all look so easy and was fab with our little boy. We were thrilled with the photo’s and Rachel took time to go through them all individually with us and help us choose, which was no easy task as there was so many great ones to choose from. I have no doubt we will call on Rachel again when Oliver is a little older, I cannot recommend her enough.

CLAIRE CLARKE

COUPLES

Although these shoots are great for proposals, they’re not just for people who are tying the knot!

There doesn’t need to be a special occasion. They can also be a great way of treating yourself and your other half to a shared experience.

If you’re visiting Scotland, your session will mean you’ll have a unique, personalised memento of your trip. One that will be around long after you’ve polished off your shortbread and savoured your last drop of whisky!

Your shoot will last around an hour. If you know which landmark, street, or part of Edinburgh’s impressive skyline you’d like as your backdrop, we’ll use it.

Whether you love green spaces, beaches, or prefer dramatic views, this city will have a location that suits you, and fits the mood you’d like to capture.

In your session, my focus will be making sure you feel at ease, and creating images that reflect who you are, and the connection between you, as honestly as possible.

FAQ

Which session should I go for?

Go for the family session unless you have just one child to be photographed ( two at a push!) and you are camera shy parents who don’t want to be in the frame. Up to two hours can seem like a long time but after photographing lots of families I know that this is how long it can take to get the best out of the session. The portrait session is more suitable for individuals, couples and babies over six months.

How long will the session last ?

Family sessions usually last around one and a half to two hours and portrait sessions up to an hour.

How do I choose a location?

We’ll discuss options before the session. I have lots of favourite locations that I know work well at different times of the year. I’m also happy to go with your choice if you have a special place that you would like to go to. An at home session usually works best for babies and very young children unless the weather’s really nice !

What happens at a family session?

I like to keep things as relaxed as possible. If we’re out on location we’ll spend some time walking around and chatting while I snap away. I may suggest some poses, especially for family groups but I like to work spontaneously and capture things as candidly as possible. If you’re having a session at home I’ll take the same approach except with less walking and more rearranging of furniture !

What should we wear?

Make sure that you’re comfortable and think about colour, if there’s going to be several people in the photos make sure that colours are complementary. Avoid red if possible as it can really dominate an image. It’s good to keep things as simple as possible, solid colours, spots / stripes or patterns are good but logos or distracting motifs are to be avoided.

Is there a limit to the number of people I can include in the session?

No there isn’t but please bear in mind that the more people that are included in the shoot the less time there is for everyone, so do think carefully about what you would like to get out of the session.

What happens if I need to reschedule?

If you need to reschedule your session due to illness please just let me know as soon as possible. Don’t worry, I understand that kids will often fall ill or fall over just before a well planned photo shoot! If your child is unwell it will show up in the photos and they are likely to be a wee bit grumpy so I would rather wait until they’re feeling and looking better!

What happens if I’ve booked an outdoor session and the weather’s uncooperative?

I’ll be keeping a close eye on the forecast so we’ll make a call on the weather as soon as we can and I’ll give you the option of rescheduling, if it’s not looking good.

How many edited images will you upload to my web gallery?

Typically I will upload at least 75 edited images from a lifestyle session and around 50 for a portrait session. Often it’s quite alot more than this !

How long will it be before I can view my photos?

Your web gallery will be ready to view 2 -3 weeks after the session and will be online for around 4 weeks.

Will my photos be edited in colour or black & white?

When I edit a shoot I’ll select the images that work well in black & white and convert them during post production. Some images will work better in colour and some are better in black & white. Sometimes an image will work both ways!

Can you frame my images for me?

Yes ! I have a wide range of wall art and framing options available. Please see my price list for full details.

Can you help me with my order?

Yes ! If you’re planning to order framed prints or wall art you can make an appointment for me to come out and go through the ordering process with you. I can help you to choose the images and advise on the framing options that will work best in your home.

How long will my order take?

Digital files will be released as soon as full payment is made and prints take around a week from order to delivery. Framed prints can take up to three weeks and fine art books are usually delivered within six weeks of ordering.

What’s the difference between web resolution and print ready digital files ?

Web resolution files are perfect for uploading, sharing on social media and viewing on screen, they have a resolution of 72ppi ( pixels per inch) which means that if you printed them the image would be very poor quality. Print ready files have a higher resolution of 300ppi, which means that they look sharp and high quality when printed.

What’s a print licence?

When you purchase a print resolution file from me that means that you have access to that image forever so you can print as many copies of that photograph as you like at whichever size you wish. I own the copyright to all of my images but when you purchase a digital file it comes with a print license which means that I have given you permission to print that image for your own use.

Will you use my photos on social media or your website?

Only if you give me permission to do so! I would never, ever use images without permission. Many of my clients love to have their photos shared but equally many people are not comfortable with it so I will always comply with your preferences. When you book a session I’ll send out a booking form for you to complete before we meet.

How long have you been a photographer?

Seven years. That’s a lot of sessions!

My sister bought vouchers from Rachel to give me the opportunity for a family photo shoot. Initial phone conversations with Rachel reassured me that she was game for dealing with young children, and the unpredictable nature of Edinburgh’s weather.

Rachel encouraged me the think about what I wanted from the photo shoot and teased preferences from me. In retrospect this was invaluable. It’s easy to leave all the decision making to ‘the expert’ but I had an idea of what I wanted hung on my lounge wall and Rachel was able to work with that, even suggesting locations that would give the right lighting for the prints I was after. I felt confident about the photo shoot having discussed clothing, timings and location.

As it happened my toddler twins were tired and grumpy and it was drizzling – best laid plans and all!! Thankfully having a window of time to work in allowed Rachel to photograph the willing people in my party and wait for the little ones to ‘warm up’. The drizzle did little to deter from great photos as Rachel directed us to sheltered areas with good lighting which produced some of my favourite shots. Towards the end of the shoot even the toddlers were happily running around and Rachel was able to capture this perfectly. Rachel checked we were happy at the end of the shoot and had taken all the photos I wanted.

The wait for the photos to come through didn’t take long, maybe 2 weeks, and the results were far better than I could have anticipated. Logging on to access a personal file displayed around 100 worked photos making deciding which ones to print almost impossible. Rachel offered to help us with the selection process but we decided to do this alone. I asked for a few of the colour pictures to be changed into black and white and Rachel did this within a day or so. Overall I cannot recommend Rachel highly enough. Listening to what her clients want, advising on how to make the mental image a physical image, and patience when organising people on the photo shoot are second to none.
