PORTRAITS

My sessions are fun and informal and I like to use natural light wherever possible. We’ll work together to find the best location for your session and I’m always open to suggestions, if you have a favourite spot. There’s so many fantastic locations in and around Edinburgh to choose from. I like to get outdoors as much as possible, although in the winter months sessions often take place at the client’s home, especially with younger children and babies.

My style is candid & natural and I’m very experienced at making

people feel at ease in front of the camera.

My aim is not only to take beautiful portraits but also to capture the relationships and connections between family members. Those silly moments, the eye contact between Mum and her newborn and the way siblings interact. These are the images that make me realise how much I love my job, there’s something very special about being able to capture the ordinary and make it beautiful.

FAMILY SESSIONS - PRICING & PACKAGES

My aim is to capture the spirit and character of your children and to create unique, beautiful images that will stand the test of time. I usually allow a couple of hours for each family session, that gives me time to get to know you a little bit and make sure everyone’s relaxed before I get the camera out. If we’re out on location we’ll spend an hour or so walking around and chatting while I snap away. I may suggest some poses, especially for family groups, but I like to work spontaneously and capture your family as candidly as possible.

The session fee is £350 this includes :

A minimum of 50 individually edited and beautifully enhanced photographs. You will be able to download and share these images from a password protected web gallery. These images will be web resolution ( 72ppi) which is suitable for online viewing & sharing but not printing.

If you would like to order framed prints or products, you can make an appointment for me to come out and help you make the best choices for your home.

FAQ

Which session should I go for?

Go for the family session unless you have just one child to be photographed ( two at a push!) and you are camera shy parents who don’t want to be in the frame. Up to two hours can seem like a long time but after photographing lots of families I know that this is how long it can take to get the best out of the session. The portrait session is suitable for individuals, couples and babies over six months. Although the focus of this session is on the individual, if Mum or Dad would like to jump in on a few shots that’s ok!

How long will the session last ?

Family sessions usually last around one and a half to two hours and portrait sessions around an hour. How do I choose a location? We’ll discuss options before the session. I have lots of favourite locations that I know work well at different times of the year. I’m also happy to go with your choice if you have a special place that you would like to go to. During the winter months babies and very young children are best photographed at home.

What happens at a family session?

I like to keep things as relaxed as possible. If we’re out on location we’ll spend some time walking around and chatting while I snap away. I may suggest some poses, especially for family groups but I like to work spontaneously and capture things as candidly as possible. If you’re having a session at home I’ll take the same approach except with less walking and more rearranging of furniture !

What should we wear?

Make sure that you’re comfortable and think about colour, if there’s going to be several people in the photos make sure that colours are complementary. Avoid red if possible as it can really dominate an image. It’s good to keep things as simple as possible, solid colours, spots / stripes or patterns are good but logos or distracting motifs are to be avoided.

What happens if I need to reschedule?

If you need to reschedule your session due to illness please just let me know as soon as possible. Don’t worry, I understand that kids will often fall ill or fall over just before a well planned photo shoot! If your child is unwell it will show up in the photos and they are likely to be a wee bit grumpy so I would rather wait until they’re feeling and looking better!

What happens if I’ve booked an outdoor session and the weather’s uncooperative?

I’ll be keeping a close eye on the forecast so we’ll make a call on the weather as soon as we can and I’ll give you the option of rescheduling, if it’s not looking good.

How many images will you upload to my web gallery?

Typically I will upload at least 75 edited images from a family session and around 50 for a portrait session. Often it’s more than this, I can get a little carried away!

How long will it be before I can view my photos?

Your web gallery will be ready to view 2 -3 weeks after the session and will be online for around 4 weeks.

Will my photos be edited in colour or black & white?

When I edit a shoot I’ll select the images that work well in black & white and convert them during post production. Some images will work better in colour and some are better in black & white. Sometimes an image will work both ways!

Can you frame my images for me?

Yes ! I have a wide range of wall art and framing options available. Please see my price list for full details.

Can you help me with my order?

Yes ! If you’re planning to order framed prints or wall art you can make an appointment for me to come out and go through the ordering process with you. I can help you to choose the images and advise on the framing options that will work best in your home.

How long will my order take?

Digital files will be released as soon as full payment is made and prints take around a week from order to delivery. Framed prints can take up to three weeks and fine art books are usually delivered within six weeks of ordering.

What’s the difference between web resolution and print ready digital files ?

Web resolution files are perfect for uploading , sharing on social media and viewing on screen, they have a resolution of 72ppi ( pixels per inch!) which means that if you printed them the image would be very poor quality. Print ready files have a higher resolution of 300ppi, which means that they look sharp and high quality when printed.

Why do high resolution files cost more and what’s a print licence?

When you purchase a print resolution file from me that means that you have access to that image forever so you can print as many copies of that photograph as you like at whichever size you wish. I own the copyright to all of my images but when you purchase a digital file it comes with a print license which means that I have given you permission to print that image for your own use.

Will you use my photos on social media or your website?

Only if you give me permission to do so! I would never, ever use images without permission. Many of my clients love to have their photos shared but equally many people are not comfortable with it so I will always comply with your preferences. When you book a session I’ll send out a booking form for you to complete before we meet.

How long have you been a photographer?

Six years. That’s a lot of family sessions!

MATERNITY, BABIES & NEWBORNS

The best time to book a maternity session is in the last trimester at around 7 – 8 months. Sessions can take place outdoors or at your home.

The ideal time to photograph newborns is during the first two weeks when they’re still all tiny and new but don’t worry if you miss that window, sessions can take place at any stage of development. I won’t be aiming to produce a set of perfectly posed shots of your baby, if you’re looking for this I would recommend booking a studio photographer. I’m much more interested in candidly documenting what is an incredibly special time for any family. My aim is to provide an intimate portrait of the early days with your new baby that will be a true reflection of life with a newborn. Sessions can be provisionally booked prior to the birth, don’t worry I know they don’t always come when they’re meant to!

After the newborn stage the next best time to photograph babies is at 6 – 9 months when they can sit up unaided and ideally not yet mobile so they can’t crawl away from me at high speed!

Baby sessions can take place in the home or outdoors depending on the time of year. It’s nice to get outside with little ones in the warmer months.

he ideal time to photograph newborns is during the first two weeks when they’re still nice and sleepy! The early days are the time to capture those lovely close ups of feet and hands and the cute curled up poses. Sessions can be provisionally booked prior to the birth, don’t worry I know they don’t always come when they’re meant to!

It is possible to photography babies at any age but the next best time to book a session is at 6-9 months, when they can sit up unaided. Baby sessions usually take place in the home but it’s nice to get outside with older babies in the warmer months.

COUPLES

Couples, engagement and proposal sessions usually last around an hour and we’ll meet at one of the fantastic outdoor locations we have on our doorstep. If you would like to go for a longer session just book a family session rather than the shorter portrait session.

Rachel came to our home to take photo’s of our 9 month old son Oliver. She came highly recommended from a friend and she didn’t disappoint. She made it all look so easy and was fab with our little boy. We were thrilled with the photo’s and Rachel took time to go through them all individually with us and help us choose, which was no easy task as there was so many great ones to choose from. I have no doubt we will call on Rachel again when Oliver is a little older, I cannot recommend her enough. CLAIRE CLARKE

My family and I were incredibly impressed by our experience working with Rachel. She is a talented photographer and skilled people person and she was able to make the four of us feel at ease in front of her camera. This is reflected in the stunning photographs she created. Rachel was very helpful in suggesting a gorgeous outdoor location which offered us a range of settings for the photo shoot. My five year old son was not at all comfortable with being photographed and Rachel was incredibly patient with him and gently and skilfully managed to bring him on side. As a result we have an incredible collection of stunning images which we’ll alway treasure. LAURA CREANEY
